Our Preschool program is for children aged 18 months – 4 years and is broken into three different programs; Nursery, Preschool and Pre-Kindergarten. Our nursery and preschool programs are developed in a way where children learn through play under the guidance of professionally trained adults. One of the most important things a child learns in preschool is how to identify and cope with emotions. Children are not born with emotional awareness and as such, often have no concept of the consequences of their actions or a sense of other people’s feelings. Their views of daily situations are based off a completely self-centered thought process. As such, children often give in to volatile expressions of emotions until they are taught the art of self soothing.
NURSERY (18 – 24 months)
Children in the Nursery program are just starting to develop their vocabulary and test out their independence. Providing a calm and safe environment conducive to learning is a top priority in Nursery and Preschool. Our teachers work with students to form strong bonds and help transfer trust from primary caregivers. We use sensory activities and small-group experiences to help children explore, build social skills and learn about their environment. Singing, dancing and messy play are the highlights of our day.
Preschool (2 – 3 Years Old)
Our learning environment is designed for exploration and discovery. Our curriculum incorporates activities that encourage children’s fine and gross motor development and sensory exploration. Dramatic play, themed activities, and make up a large portion of the day. As a Scandinavian based program, children are given plenty of opportunities to learn and explore outdoors.
Our program helps children build resiliency while helping them develop self-awareness and build problem solving and critical thinking skills. As children progress through the Preschool program, activities advance to include number representation, alphabet recognition and fine and gross motor skills.
Pre-Kindergarten (3-4 Years Old)
Our Pre-Kindergarten program is designed to prepare children for their first kindergarten experience. We focus on teaching language development, cognitive skills and language development. Children are usually very interested in books, especially if their parents have been reading aloud to them since early childhood. We have found that many children are ready to learn basic phonics and reading as early as 3 and 4 years old. Developing an early affinity and appreciation for books and reading is a primary objective in our kindergarten readiness program. We believe that the earlier you start developing a child’s interest in books and reading, the better. Children in Pre-Kindergarten become familiar with pre-writing, number recognition and gaining a strong foundation in the letter sounds and symbols of the alphabet.
DK Schoolhouse is the only Preschool in Phnom Penh to incorporate the internationally acclaimed Brillkids programs for teaching English, reading and music to very young children. It is based on a revolutionary software system that delivers lessons in ways never before possible, making learning fun for your child. At DK Schoolhouse we are keenly aware of the dangers fo too much screen time for young, developing minds and bodies, so all Brillkids classes are presented on a large screen TV for a maximum of 10 – 15 minutes per day and always with a qualified teacher in attendance for discussion and application.

Should a child loose interest during a lesson, teachers may change the activity and continue the lesson when the child has regained interest.
